Welcome to the land of mighty Marathas! Maratha people, who inhabit the
beautiful state of Maharashtra, are known for their bravery. The legendary
king Shivaji is their most famous face. A trip to Maharashtra is a wonderful
way to explore the rich heritage of the royal Marathas. Travellers can
travel on their own, however, a more interesting, comfortable and luxurious

One of the most famous luxury trains of India, Deccan Odyssey takes you to
places that are significant in Maratha history. You can also enjoy the
majestic landscape of Deccan plateau and sublime coastline of Maharashtra
which is extremely refreshing and soothing. Apart from Maharashtra, the
train also zooms through the scintillating state of Goa
Deccan Odyssey first came into existence after a memorandum of
understanding was signed between Railway ministry and Maharashtra Tourism
Development Corporation (MTDC) in the year 2001. Following approval by the
railway board, integral coach factory ( ICF) took almost ten months to
complete the construction of Deccan Odyssey. Trial run started in the year
2003 but it was on 16th January 2004 that Deccan Odyssey took its maiden
Every Wednesday, this train start its journey from Chhatrapati Shivaji
Terminus in Mumbai and through the next eight days and seven nights, takes
its passenger on a beautiful journey.
Facilities on board
There are 21 coaches in this train, of which 13 are meant for the
passengers. 11 coaches have 4 twin bedded chambers, while rest two
presidential suites have two twin bedded coupe. All the saloons have
attached bathroom along with hot and cold water facilities. Each saloon has
music channel, intercom and CD/MP3 player for passengers entertainment.
Saloons have been splendidly designed with wall to wall carpetings. At the
end of each saloon, there is lounge where passengers can chill out, watch
television and interact with the co-passengers. There are two restaurants -
Peshwa I and Peshwa II - in the train, serving guests with delicious food. A
well stocked bar is always available for the passengers.
This train has special conference cum business centre, which at time can
accommodate thirty people. This room is well equipped with television sets,
DVD players and Internet enable computers. Specially for business class
passengers this centre is very useful. There is also an ayurvedic body
massage centre and gymnasiums where passengers can completely relax. Other
facilities include beauty parlour, a well maintained library, money
exchange/credit card facility and variety of collection of CD's and MP3.
Exclusive smoking and non-smoking suite cars are also the star attraction of
covers some of the most beautiful areas of Maharashtra and few strips of
Goa. Various destinations covered by Deccan Odyssey are-
Mumbai, Ratnagiri, Ganapatiphule, Jaigadh, Sindhudung, Tarkarli backwaters,
Sawantwadi, Goa, Kolhapur, Pune, Aurangabad, Ellora caves, Jalgaon, Ajanta
Caves, Nashik and back to Mumbai.
Day 1: Mumbai
Train departs from Chhatrapati Shivaji
Terminus. Dinner and overnight stay on board.
Day 2: Ratnagiri Ganapatiphule - Jaigadh
Arrival: 07.40 hrs.
Early morning, the train arrives at Bhoke railway station. After having
breakfast, passengers will be taken by AC bus to the Rai Bhatgaon Jetty
to experience backwater cruise in Jaigarh fort. After that, the bus will
take tourists to Ganapatiphule. Here visitors can enjoy in the best
beach along the Konkan coast. Have fun in the beach and then go for
lunch at any of the beach resorts. Again board the bus and move towards
Ratnagiri town. Once there, visitors can check out Ratnadurg fort,
Lokmanya Tilak Smarak and Ratnagiri bazaar. Dinner will be served on
board and overnight stay in train.
Day 3: Sindudurg
Arrival: 08.25 hrs.
Day begins with arrival at Sindudurg Nagari railway station in the
morning. After breakfast passengers will board air-conditioned bus and
proceed towards Malvan Jetty to visit Sindhudurg sea fort by boat. Lunch
at a beach resort and to have fun in the beach of Tarkali resort will be
the next activity of day. Boat cruise from Tarkali Creek to Kalsa Jetty
will be awesome experience for the visitors.
Those interested in checking out rural handicrafts will surely love
shopping at 'Shilpagrama' crafts village at Sawantwadi. Passengers will
be served on board and stay overnight in the train.
Day 4: Goa
Arrival: 07.30 hrs.
As the train arrives in the Karmakali railway station early morning,
passengers will board bus and will be taken around the old Goa area.
There are many beautiful old churches in the area like Basilica of Born
Jesus Church, Se Cathedral Church and the Church of St. Franciss of
Assisi, which will mesmerize the tourists. After a while, the bus will
take you to Panjim city, where you will have lunch at Fort Aguada Beach
resort. After lunch visitors will be taken to Dona Paula, a lovely small
palm fringed beach. This beach is famous for its casuarinas grooves and
Visit to Fontanhas, a famous Latin quarters at Panjim is also part of
schedule. Then tourists will head towards Madgaon railway station.
Day 5: Pune City
Arrival: 08.15 hrs.
Train reaches Pune early in the morning. This cultural capital of
Maharashtra is today one of the fastest developing cities. In Pune
tourists will be taken around in air-conditioned buses to various
important tourists spots. Kelkar museum which has large collection of
artifacts from 17th century is big tourist attraction of city. This city
is world famous for Osho Ashram, which is one of the largest centre for
meditation and spirituality. Lunch will be served at Le Meridian Hotel
and then visitors will be taken to tribal museum which possess 1980 rare
and precious articles related to tribal life. Agha Khan Palace is
special museum dedicated to the Gandhi family. Then tourists can enjoy
sound and light show at Shaniwarwada.
In the evening, again you will board the train from Pune Railway
Day 6: Aurangabad
Arrival: 08.30 hrs.
Historical Daulatabad Fort is a very important part of this diverse
city of Maharashtra. World famous Ellora caves will be the next tourist
spot of Aurangabad. This world famous heritage site, houses 34 different
cave temples dedicated to various religion like Hinduism, Jainism and
Buddhism. After having lunch at Hotel Taj, guest will be taken to
Shivaji museum which has large collection of weapons and antiques of the
past Maratha kingdom. Some other tourist spots of city include
Aurangabad cave no.7 and 8, Bibi Ka Maqbara ( a replica of Taj Mahal).
In the evening guest will board the train from Aurangabad railway
Day 7: Ajanta Cave and Nashik
Arrival : 08.00 hrs.
You will reach Jalgaon railway station in the morning and board a bus
to proceed towards Ajanta caves, a world renowned heritage. Here
visitors can see some of finest paintings and sculptures from 2nd
century BC to 7th century AD. Ajanta cave welcomes large number of
visitors every year from all over the world. After boarding train at
Bhusawal railway station, the journey moves towards Nashik. At Nashik
guests will be taken to Panchawati Ghat and famous Sula wine yard. Later
in the night, you will board the train and start journey towards Mumbai.
Day 8: Mumbai
Arrival : 08.15 hrs.
While returning back to Mumbai you will have your breakfast on board.
